Walk Faster, Age Slower: The Simple Steps Boost

A brisker walk might be the secret to staying strong and independent as you age.

New research from the University of Chicago shows that increasing your walking pace by just 14 steps per minute can significantly boost strength and mobility, even in older adults already facing frailty.

The study found that those who picked up the pace (to around 100 steps per minute) saw major improvements in everyday function, like walking longer distances without fatigue. It’s a small change with big benefits, no gym membership or fancy gear required.

To make this even more accessible, researchers created a new smartphone app that accurately tracks your walking cadence, helping you build healthier habits with just your phone.

Whether you're strolling through the shops or heading out for a daily walk, a slightly faster pace could mean more energy, fewer falls, and better quality of life as you age.

So next time you walk, just step it up a little. Your future self will thank you.
