Cardiovascular Disease down, still major concern

Deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD) have seen the biggest drop in 15 years, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Around 20,046 people died of CVD in 2012 compared with 28,299 in 1998 while the proportion of deaths caused by heart disease has fallen from 22.2% in 1998 to 13.6% in 2012. ABS data also showed a 40% drop in heart attack death rates during the past 15 years. While cautioning that now is not the time to become complacent in efforts to stem the tide of the effects of CVD, NHF national director of CV health Dr Rob Grenfell said the next task was to address the resulting burden on the health system as more people are living with heart damage and disability.
