New research estimates diarrhoeal illness contracted in the community – as opposed to in hospital – is costing Australia around $75 million a year.
The study, which looked at admissions to three hospitals, found that people aged 65 or older and with other underlying health concerns were most at risk. The average cost was $5605 per admission.
