Heart Week 4 to 10 May

Heart week is on 4 to 10 May and provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the problem of heart disease and to help improve the heart health of all Australians.

Each year, almost 10,000 Australians die of a heart attack. And more than 1million Australians aged 30-65 are at high risk of having a heart attack or stroke — but they may not even know they’re at risk.

More people are diagnosed with serious heart conditions, including heart attacks, on Mondays than on any other day of the week according to new research. The research involved more than 45,000 heart patients between 2008 and 2012, and showed that the number of people presenting with heart conditions on a Monday was at least 27% higher than either Saturday or Sunday.

Heart Foundation health director, Rachelle Foreman said, “With Heart Week approaching, the Heart Foundation is urging all Australians to learn the warning signs of a heart attack,” and get treated “within an hour of the first symptom.”

During Heart Week this year, the Heart Foundation will be urging all Australians to learn the warning signs of a heart attack and reduce their risk of having one.
