Mum's Low Vitamin D Linked to Dental Cavities in Infancy

The infants of mums with low vitamin D levels during pregnancy have a higher risk of dental cavities, according to a recent study in Pediatrics.

The study authors led by Dr. Robert J. Schroth from University of Manitoba's dental school in Winnipeg, Canada cite previous research showing inadequate maternal vitamin D (assessed by using 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25OHD]) levels during pregnancy may affect tooth calcification, predisposing enamel hypoplasia and early childhood caries (ECC).
