Headache Week 15-21 September 2014

15 - 21 September is Headache Week. Supported by Headache Australia.

Headaches are a real pain ... literally! There are around 20 muscles in your head and neck that can refer pain to the head so it's not suprising that the most common type of headaches may be caused by these muscles.

Tension headaches are very common. They tend to start at the back of the head and move forward. The headache can involve the scalp, the temporal regions on either side of your forehead, and the back of the head just above the neck, and the neck itself. The pain is due to tightness of the neck and scalp muscles, and can ultimately cover your entire head. The muscle tightness or contraction is commonly caused by stress, therefore the name 'tension'.

A tension headache starts at the back of your head and spreads forward. It can be described as a dull pressure or a squeezing pain, often described as a tight band or vice around the head. The muscles in your neck, shoulders, and jaw may also feel tight and sore, and you can have difficulty sleeping.
