ASMI Hails TCM Prize

The Australian Self-Medication Industry says the awarding of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology of Medicine to Chinese researcher Youyou Tu is a “big win” for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Tu is the first China-based scientist to win a science Nobel, and has been recognised for the development of the antimalarial drug arteminisin (qinghaosu) in the late 1960s and 1970s.  Arteminisin-based combination therapies are recommended by the World Health Organization as the first-line treatment for malaria.  Tu was the first to extract the biologically active component of the Chinese herb Artemisia annua (sweet wormwood) which led to the clinical study and eventual commercialisation of the drug.
