Pharmacy: The Latest Stats

The number of pharmacists continues to climb, statistics reveal. Pharmacist numbers continued to rise steadily during 2016 according to the latest data released by the Pharmacy Board of Australia.

In December 2016, there were 30,368 registered pharmacists, up from 29,717 in June 2016, the Board’s latest newsletter reveals.

This total comprises, according to registration type, 27,452 general registration pharmacists, 1,777 with provisional registrations, seven with limited registration, and 1132 classified as non-practising registration.

Currently 61.6% of registered pharmacists are female, a percentage that has also continued to climb.

In June 2015 there were 29,014 pharmacists, of whom 60.72% were female.

In March 2012, the earliest statistics currently listed on the Board website there were 26,434 pharmacists, of whom 57.29% were female.

In total more than half (16,466) of the registered pharmacists were aged between 25 and 39 years. Another 136 were aged over 80 years.
