Showing the Way

Australian pharmacy faculty maintains its world leading ranking. Monash University has ranked second in the world for pharmacy and pharmacology in the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject. The result means Monash has held onto the position it garnered in the 2017 World University rankings.

Professor William Charman, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, welcomed the ranking and the recognition of the faculty’s reputation for contemporary education, transformative research programs and impactful profession-wide collaborations.

“This outcome is a result of the ambition, talent and team-based work of our staff, students and alumni – and our collaborative partnerships with educators, research groups and industry partners, and professional organisations around the world,” he said.

The University of Sydney was the second ranked Australian pharmacy school, in 18th place overall, followed by the University of Queensland (equal 25th), and the University of Melbourne (41st).

The QS rankings list the world’s top 959 universities, and are based on a series of qualitative measures. The rankings are calculated taking into account a wide range of factors including academic reputation, employer reputation, and quantitative measures of research excellence such as citations and staff H-indexes.

The 2018 QS assessment of Monash’s Pharmacy and Pharmacology subject area included a perfect score of 100 for the academic reputation indicator, as well as very strong scores in research publication-based citation metrics.

The leading university internationally in pharmacy and pharmacology was Harvard, from the US. Five of the top 10 schools were from the UK.
