IBS FODMAP support

A new food certification logo that indicates a given food is FODMAP Friendly (incorporating fructose and lactose-friendly foods) is destined to make life easier for IBS sufferers.

FODMAP stands for fermentable, oligosaccharide, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. These foods are short chain, poorly absorbed carbohydrates which when eaten enter the small intestine where they are not broken down and absorbed.  The food then enters the large intestine where gut bacteria ferment the food leading to an increase in gas production and an exacerbation of IBS symptoms.

The FODMAP Friendly certification was created to help people easily identify and select food products that are low in FODMAPs, which are a collection of short-chain carbohydrates and polyols that trigger symptoms of IBS and other inflammatory bowel diseases.

The move has been initiated by dietitian Sue Shepherd, with selected items already featuring the logo and more to come shortly.
